Case study-Livestock Management practices during winter months

Aflatoxicosis is a main problem encountered in Cattle during winter months. Feeds and forages become mouldy due to moisture. It favors the growth of Aspergillus fungal growth. This in turn will produce a potent Hepato toxin called Aflatoxin. Anorexia, Diarrhoea, reduction in milk yield, etc are the common symptoms seen in cattle. In poultry it may cause reduction in egg production, meat production, etc. It will also affect Ducks, Quails, Rabbits, Goats and Pigs.

Control measures

• Mouldy feeds should not be given to livestock and poultry.
• Feeds should be sun dried for 6-8 hours to control growth of Aspergillus fungus
• Feeds should not be stored in moist areas
• Feed bags should be kept on wooden plank not touching the wall
• Feeds should not be taken using moisture containing vessels.
• Since Ground nut cake is the potent source of Aflatoxin during winter it should not be included in the cattle feeds

Other measures

• Animal should be housed in cattle sheds during night hours to prevent respiratory diseases
• Cattle sheds should be cleaned regularly.
• Quick lime can be spayed on a weekly interval in the manure pit to control ectoparasites
• Mouldy feeds should not be given to poultry
• Vitamin mineral mixtures can be incorporated in the livestock ration @ 20gms/day in cattle, 5 gms/day in goats and one tsp per 5 litres of water in Poultry
• Vitamin A supplementation is required to prevent deficiency of Vitamin A. If green fodder is not available 10ml Fish liver oil has to be given daily to Cattle.
• Animal should be given broad spectrum anthelmintics during winter
