Case study-Livestock Management practices during winter months Aflatoxicosis is a main problem encountered in Cattle during winter months. Feeds and forages become mouldy due to moisture. It favors the growth of Aspergillus fungal growth. This in turn will produce a potent Hepato toxin called Aflatoxin. Anorexia, Diarrhoea, reduction in milk yield, etc are the common symptoms seen in cattle. In poultry it may cause reduction in egg production, meat production, etc. It will also affect Ducks, Quails, Rabbits, Goats and Pigs. Control measures • Mouldy feeds should not be given to livestock and poultry. • Feeds should be sun dried for 6-8 hours to control growth of Aspergillus fungus • Feeds should not be stored in moist areas • Feed bags should be kept on wooden plank not touching the wall • Feeds should not be taken using moisture containing vessels. • Since Ground nut cake is the potent source of Aflatoxin during winter it should not be included in the cattle ...
